Drip Castles and Sand Buckets
Drip Castles and Sand Buckets
8x8 Oil on board with a black wood frame
My earliest memories of summer vacations are at the beach. It is my favorite place on earth. Mom loved the beach and shared all the wonders of the water and sand with me. We collected shells, dug for sand crabs, road the waves, and read books by the surf. We ate sandy peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and road our bikes back to the house at the end of a long day soaking in the sun. Making drip castles was high on our list of joint activities. We would dig a hole by the surf and let it fill with water and then sit and scoop handfuls of wet sand and let them drip to form really cool castles. We would compete to see who could make the biggest castle and whose castle would last the longest with the rising tide. Sometimes I used my bucket to create a sturdy base in order to compete with the queen of drip castles. Always a yellow bucket with a red handle…those were the days.
